Utilitarianism vs. Kantianism Essay -- Papers Immanuel Kant Ethics Mor

Utilitarianism vs. KantianismEthics can be defined as the conscious reflection on our moral beliefs with the ride of improving, extending or refining those beliefs in some way. (Dodds, Lecture 2) Kantian moral theory and Utilitarianism are two theories that attempt to answer the ethical nature of gentle beings. This paper will attempt to explain how and why Kantian moral theory and Utilitarianism differ as well as discuss why I believe Kants theory provides a more plausible account of ethics. Immanuel Kants deonotological ethical theory assesses if actions are moral found on the persons will or plan of acting. Kants theory can be categorized as a deonotological because actions are not assessed to be morally permissible on the basis of consequences they produce, but alternatively on the form of the agents will in acting, (Dodds, Lecture 7) therefore his actions are based on duty and not consequential. Kantianism is based on three principles maxims, willing, and the monotone imperative. Kant states that a maxim is a general rule or principle which will explain what a person takes himself to be doing and the circumstances in which he takes himself to be doing it (Feldman, 1999, 201). It is important that this principle be universalisable and that the maxim can be applied consistently to everyone that encounters similar situations, therefore willed as a universal law. The act aspect of Kants theory is willing. This involves the agent consistently committing oneself to make an action occur. He states that, In general, we can say that a person wills inconsistently if he wills that p be the case and he wills that q be the case and its impossible for p and q to be the case together (Feldman, 1999, 203). T... ...nces. Kantianism focuses on the motivation of actions, has clear and distinct entrap of universal rules, and is morally logical. On the other hand, Utilitarianism relies on the consequences of an action, has no set universal laws as each actio n is assessed on an individual basis, and morality is based on the results of the assessment. Because of these reasons, I believe that Kantianism is the more ethically plausible theory of the two. The Creek Indians :: American America History

The Creek IndiansLocation and Background The early English traders gave the Creek native Americans their name because they usually built their villages on or near creeks or rivers. If they were to still have their villages it would include areas of Northern Florida and Eastern Louisiana and Southern Tennessee. The majority of the villages were located along the banks of the Coosa, Tallaposa, Flint, Ocmulgee, and Chattachoochee rivers. The native sacred scripture for the most powerful band of Creeks was the Muskogees. The Creek native Americans were the most powerful and widespread tribe of the Southeast culture area. It was also thought that the Creeks were long wooly-minded ancestors of the Mound Builders. Villages The Chief of The Creek village or tribe was called an amirco, but he was not the absolute ruler. His job in the village included fashioning important decisions.Once he made a decision many town criers would go out to announce the it to other tribes within the Creek. Th e Creeks were agricultural, but war like. The depend of Creeks at one time was 30,000. The villages were separated into two red and white. Red towns had warriors who launched raids far and wide for purposes of honor and revenge. Red Creeks usually held war dances often to value them selves in battle. Within the white towns lived most of the peace makers who kept track of alliances and gave sanctuary to refugees or poor people. White Creeks held ceremonies such as the signing of treaties or alliances. Each village had a town square at its center with seats where spectators could sit.The town square was use for ceremonies and games. Each village had a vizor town house with clay walls and a cone shaped bark roof about 25 feet high. This was a ceremonial lodge and was also used for shelter for the homeless. Some town houses were smaller with a slanted bark roof only about 10 feet high. The most common house had a slanted bark roof with the roof about 7 feet high these were used for i ndividual families, it held about, four to five people in it.. Each family had a summer and winter house both were packed with mud. The summer house was often used as a guest house for when visitors came to visit. They also owned their own granary which was half open and they also had a warehouse which was open on all four sides similar to a chickee.

Man’s Struggles of Fate by the Curse of Birth in Eugene ONeills A Lon

Mans Struggles of Fate by the Curse of Birth in Eugene ONeills A Long Days Journey into Night Eugene ONeills A Long Days Journey into Night deals with tragedy and its attendant focus on character rather than plot. Another emphasis on the play is on the away that ceases to haunt his characters. ONeills characters of A Long Days Journey into Night effort with the historical. These characters all see to agree with Mary Tyrone who claims that a person cant help being what the past made him (Baym 1313). The fact that a character can struggle with his or her past suggests that the past is something open to question, changeable, and perhaps even unknowable. Patricia Schroeder says The past as it invades the grant or as individual characters interpret it had little bullion on the formally realistic stage (Schroeder 30). ONeills characters of A Long Days Journey into Night reveal the ongoing past gradually and continuously throughout the play. As one reads the play, he or sh e can see ONeill deal with his own past through these characters. For Eugene ONeill, there is only one real subject for drama The subject here is the same ancient one that always and always will be the one subject for drama, and that is mans struggle with his own fate. The struggle used to be with the gods, but it is now with himself, his own past. Implicit in this controversy are a number of ONeills fundamental principles in this play and his own life. ONeill embeds principles of Greek tragedy within a naturalistic play and so fully realizes his lifelong goal of dramatizing man and this struggle with himself, his own past (Schroeder 30). In this play it is, indeed, the struggle to understand the formative past that s... ...less present of the Tyrones. ONeill not only challenged the distinction between the past and present, he also broke down the barrier between stage and watcher that had been erected along with the proscenium arch. The mans struggle with self, fate and the past is a common theme among many modernist writers. Through ONeills experimentation of eliciting an emotional response through his realistic settings and characters, we learn more about the common man. We all struggle with our pasts and our place in this world. At least through works like A Long Days Journey into Night we know that we are not alone in having a dysfunctional family with problems and conflicts. We all have problems, struggles and fears. These elements are just a part of life. Life is taking our past and learning from it so that we can live our present and prepare for a future.

An investigation of the affect of the concentration an of the rate of :: GCSE Chemistry Coursework Investigation

An investigation of the affect of the concentration an of the rate ofreaction.Introduction.We be trying to find out the affect of sharp concentration on the rateof reaction, we are using 2, 1.5, 1, 0.5, 0.25 Molar acid. In our investigate, we are reacting it with sodium thiosulphate. The collisiontheory volition be involved in this, for instance the more concentratedthe acid we use, the faster the reaction leave behind occur and the lower theconcentration the slower the reaction will occur, this is because thecollision theory says that if something is more concentrated then itwill bump around more because there will be more of the substance. Wecould use a catalyst to speed up the reaction, this allows themolecules to move around easier to help them to collide more to speedup the reaction for instance say that people are trying to get overwall it is possible but it will take a slow process and say that weadd a catalyst, our catalyst is a ladder this enables the people(molecules) to get over the wall quicker and easier than they normallywould. In this experiment we take to control the amount of acid, amount of water, chemicalswater temperature amount of sodiumthiosulphate and to all agree when the x is gone on the paper. This novel uses symbolism throughout its entirety to help portray importance and teach lessons. The book describes in detail the horrific exploits of a band of young children who make a strike transition from civilized to barbaric. Lord of the Flies commands a pessimistic outlook that seems to show that man is inherently tied to society, and without it, we would likely return to savagery. Golding does not keep abreast right out and show this however he uses symbolism to allow this idea to show. There are many different examples of symbolism in the unexampled included are Piggys Glasses, the beast and fire. Perhaps the most symbolic of these is fire.Throughout the novel fire served many, varied uses. Fire was used for extravagance during the cold nights. It also created smoke, which served as a point to potential rescuers. Perhaps the most basic, yet most import ant use for fire was for cooking. Without it the boys would not necessitate been able to roast the pigs. The importance for fire was not at first understood by the boys. In Chapter Four the fire is out while a ship is spotted in the distance. If the fire was lit it could have been used to make smoke. Journal of My Two Live

Reading Jhumpa Lahiris essay, My Two Live, I got that the author, as an Indian-American, tried to define herself throughout her whole life. The changing of her feeling for her identity and the closing of her parents and her bicultural experience changed her feeling for her identity from humiliating to confusing to accepting to cherishing. Lahiri wanted convey us that the bicultural things can be seen as a shifting equating and she used wholeness plus one for instances. Basically, I agree with her notion. However, in my opinion, the result of the equation is not just zero or two.It should be relate three or even bigger, when you really understand your gr take in terra firma, United State of America. In one hand, I think most of people would rattling easy to lose their way when they are squeezed by two different cultures existing in their daily life. As the second generation of immigrants, my older cousin-german also had used to face this issue. When, he was a middle school studen t, he had avoided speaking Chinese, changing his hairs color to yellow, and love to eat sandwiches and drink soda. Tried to do lot of things to make him seemed more American. Obviously, he is an American without any embellished. But, he did not understand this at that moment. As a naive child, he just hoped he can looks more similar with others around him. At that time, one plus one, of course, smaller than two or even equal zero. In the other hand, along with the growing up, the more social experiences you collected, the deeper understanding of yourself, then you would find that the result of this equation bigger, not trammel in two. Because two different cultures combined together is not a simply one plus one equation. It contains great potential and energy, like when degree centigrade meets oxygen can explode incredible brilliancy.Actually, I am not so familiar with America history or the great persons of this nation. However, story of my sr. cousins I would love to share. As I aforementioned, he had used to doubt himself. But now, his has already got the doctor degree and even make a paper in Science, one of the most top scientific journals in the world. I remember acknowledgment of his doctoral defence stated that he would love to thanks his dear grandma since to be a doctor is grandmas dream. Following the willing of grandparents or parents is a very traditional thinking inChina. When persevering and enduring hardship, which comes from his family, meets critical and innovative coming from his American part, my cousin got an achievement. I think that beyond what one plus one equal two can include. So far, he hope his children can be teach by Chinese culture or even analyze in China someday, even if his wife is a White. I am not sure if this example reasonable, but this is what I really want to tell. Moreover, as a foreigner, from my sight of view, America is the one of most open and tolerant nations in the world. Democratic and Liberty are two words w hat Americans the most high-minded of and pursuing. Thus, when you are walking on a normal street in any city of US, you will find that really like walking in the United Nations. Citizens of the USA might have various colors of sinks, speak English with different accents, and wear sorts of clothes. Whats more, you can buy anything you want by yourself in spite of understanding nothing English. I think this interesting phenomenon just belongs with America. Therefore, unique and individual are very common and important pass judgment of America.Everyone have an American dream, and everyone have the opportunity to achieve it. You can learn everything you like and grow individually. American culture comes from hundreds of cultures. The diversity of culture creates lots of advantages to the US, analyze with any other countries. All these above are the reasons why America, a country less than 300 years history, can be the greatest nation all over the world. Therefore, dont be confusion b ecause this is a part of America, what make it so amazing and fantastic.

Glory of women Essay

Siegfried Sassoons Glory of Women is a poem depicting the roles which women played during World War I. The poem is made up of a series of disrespectful statements about women. Sassoon attempts to use these statements to convey the cruel and ironic side of the war that women do not tend to see.Glory of Women is a war-time lyric, constructed of 14 lines, with a vary rhyme scheme of ABABABAB CDECDE making it a Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet. It is divided into two sections, the octave which consists of the first eight lines, and the sestet the final six lines. It is written in iambic pentameter, which helps clarify the meaning of the poem as you read it.The title of the poem itself is ambiguous, posing the question whether womens roles during war are glorious as the soldiers on the battlefield. A number of techniques were used in this poem to communicate Sassoons idea of emotional truth about the war. Sassoon speaks directly to the readers by writing in second individual You, an attempt to involve the readers and bring attention to those he directed this poem at women. He also uses assonance which creates a euphonious effect when organism read. The poem begins with a praising tone, with sarcasm and bitterness scattered throughout the rest of its content. You love us when were heroes, home on leave, Or wounded in a mentionable place. depicts womens ignorance in regards to war, believing soldiers to be heroes only when they are wounded in a mentionable place. The Great War offered many job opportunities for women that had persistent been denied them. You make us shells. portray the many women who were recruited into munitions factories during the war. This line is ironic in a sense that it is the shells that kill the soldiers, whether they be British or German. It is a collocation to line 8 And mourn our laurelled memories when were killed, depicting that the women make shells that kill soldiers, and are therefore further heating the conflict of war, creating more de aths and mourning. sanitary imageries were presented in the final three lines of the poem, aGerman mother knitting socks for her son while he lay dead in the mud. This imagery shows the ignorance and how very much knowledge and experience women have about the truth of war. It is intended to distress those women who tend to spend time at home, and have no idea of the atrocity of war that Sassoon and many other soldiers had experienced. This imagery is also a contrast of women and mens roles during The Great War. Sassoon is anguished by the fact that women sit at home well while soldiers are risking their lives on the battlefield. The imageries from the final three lines also depict that whether it be British or German, the soldiers are all individuals. His face is trodden deeper in the mud. allowed readers to empathize with the honour that dead soldiers often receive. German soldiers also have women to mourn their laurelled memories when they are killed. The emotions that Sassoon po rtrayed in this poem are both surly and miserable. Trampling the terrible corpses blind with blood. describes the realism of war, in contrast to By tales of dirt and danger fondly thrilled. Sassoon believes that women perceive war as a fantastic story, where in reality it is full of blood and violence. Therefore, the title and the content of this compelling and powerful poem are written in pure irony. In Sassoons opinion, women cannot befool glory by knitting at home, nor by making shells that encourage further killings. The use of narration in second person effectively leaves readers with an intelligence of the brutality of war, and an insight into the roles which women played during World War I.ReferencesSassoon, S. Do Video Games Kill Essay

According to the article Do Video Games Kill? author, Karen Sternheimer, brings up an interesting and controversial subject about flick games. If we postulate to understand why young good deal, particularly middle class or other stable environments, become homicidal, we need to look beyond the games they play. Sternheimer starts her article by giving an example of the video game Doom that became a target for critics. Shooting at the schools in Kentucky, Oregon, and Colorado were most probably caused by video games. The author sticks to this explanation because of many influential opinions from politicians, news, and different groups of people. Media is providing information to the public about shooters being the ones who are playing video games. The politicians, as well as the FBI are claiming that the only logical explanation for people committing irrational decisions and exhibit aggressions is playing violent games. Those video games cast represented a variety of social anxieti es such as computer technology, the ability of adults to control what young people do and know. In addition, politicians came up with an idea that everything video games contain are sliminess and crime. As mentioned above, politicians are not the only ones, who are blaming video games as a cause of every crime and abnormal behavior of people. After shootings at schools in many places throughout America, political intervention accelerates newspapers and news immediately to respond to those incidents by blaming the use of video games.Famous newspapers such as forward-looking York Times, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, are making headlines, in which they are accusing Days of Doom of the shooting. Media created fear among people, who tend to connect negative sides of media to major issues. Sternheimer argues that you cannot blame the producers and manufactures of things that had caused harm to others. It is the people who cause the harm not the video games themselves. The author tried to exp lain to people to look deeper for the cause, other than to just blame video games. Although people have tried to sue the producers and manufactures, they have not won their cases in the courts.

Organizations flummox to made good motivational programs for employees to get good performance fromthem. If employees are move thus they perform better, they feel satisfied with their occupancy, so they are committed to their organization as well. This research will encourage organizations to motivate their employees and understand the things that motivate them. craft RESEACH QUESTIONWhat are the contributing features, plans and programs of the company that motivate employees? To understand the phenomenon of employee motivation of Burger King, given below questions of research should be kept in mind to make a base of this research. The current benefits that employees are getting? How the motivation of employees is maintained by the organization? What are the organizations current and future strategies to motivate their workers?RESEARCH OBJECTIVES motivation is the challenging issue to manage and work, because of the individual behavior or attitudes. As eve ry individual is different from each other, their behaviors, attitudes and penurys are also different. For every individual the motivating promoters could be different according to their circumstances as well as their priorities. Another factor could be that an employee is not fit for the channel he is doing or he has no interest in that work. So such resources and encouragement should be provided to him so he can develop interest. This research assignment will results in understanding the motivation ofemployees given by the Burger King and which leads to overall better and good performance.LITERATURE REVIEW PRELIMINARY publications review is a process of studying published or unpublished work given in the journals, magazines, newspaper, thesis and online discipline to get references. These references will help in getting knowledge of the other peoples work and will also help in providing support to our arguments and judgments. In organizations point of view motivation means the d rive force which creates interest in employee to work hard. A motivated employee will have capacity to work hard and give good results. It also determines the employees effort and level of persistence (Bernie, 2012). Organizations need motivated employees to work. Motivated employees help organizations in their survival. Motivated employees are more productive as they know when they will be productive they will get reward for it (Bowen & Radhakrishna, 1991). Motivated employees are also quality oriented. They identify different good ways to do the job. There are many factors that could help in motivating employees. The first and most important factor is job design. Good job design will surely results in creating the positive motivation of employees. The design of job can have a significance jounce on employee motivation. If a job is challenging and different interesting tasks are involved in it then employee could be motivated enough to do it. wrinkle design feeleres are four in number job enlargement, job simplification, job enrichment and job rotation (Bernie, 2012).Standardization and specialization of the work is known as job simplification. byplay simplification results in motivating the employees because they have clearly identified tasks. But sometimes Job simplification does not helps in creating motivation for the employees because it may result in boring of employee by doing the said(prenominal) task again and again. A largevariety of different tasks to perform by the employees, so that employee can have interest in the job and may result in motivation of employees, this phenomenon is known as Job Enlargement. Job rotation helps to walk out workers to different tasks and departments after a specific period of time to maintain their interest and motivation to work. Job enrichment aims to enhance the actual job by introducing different motivational factors (Bernie, 2012).Large numbers of studies are conducted to see the impact of job design tech niques to motivate employees. Job design questionnaire was used to study the impact of Job design in motivating the employees by Campion and Thayer (1985) and the result of their study has shown that jobs having proper Job design will lead to motivate the employees and employees will have less problem in performing the work needed for a job and less health complaints. Hackman (1980) conducted a study and results shown that redesigning a job will surely leads in providing good productivity, increase the quantity of work and motivation in employees. Job Enlargement or Job Enrichment is the main tool to do this. This is a human nature that he ever motivated when he knows that his work is valuable and worthy. Motivation also comes from the maven of acknowledgement and respect. Rewards are some other type of motivation. Intrinsic reward and extrinsic reward are main two types of rewards. Rewards that are internal like feeling good or so doing something, sense of accomplishment is kno wn as intrinsic rewards. Extrinsic rewards are external like incentives, bonuses, increments etc. (Fair & Silvestri, 1992). When specific goals are set for employees then they also grow good performance and feel motivated as they feel themselves an important asset of organization. Many researchers have worked to investigate the effectiveness of reward on the motivation of employees. Pierce, Cameron, Banko and So (2003) researchers have arranged a research to get the exact idea that how extrinsic rewards given by the company creates an impact on employees motivation. They found that people who got rewards for their performancewere motivated intrinsically and those who do not get rewards were not motivated at all. Another study on the same topic was conducted by Wiersma (1992). He found that extrinsic rewards are important and they increase motivation.Dobre (2013) argued that empowerment and recognition are the factors that increase motivation of employee. Employees are motivated on g etting empowerment and appreciation which results in good performance of employees. Organizations should try to give empowerment and appreciation to the employees so that they can perform well. Bartol and Martin (1998) examine that motivation is a powerful tool to get good performance from the employees. Kalimullah (2010) argued that a motivated employee puts his efforts for the progress of organization. Sara et al. (2004) suggested that good salaries are the most important factor in motivating employees. Employees are also motivated through good leadership (Baldoni, 2005).Working environment is also another important factor for employee motivation. If organization provides a good working environment to their employees then the employees feel motivated and happy to work in that organization. Many Psychological theories also talks about motivation. Most important theory is Maslows need based theory (1954) that suggests that there are different levels of needs and on each level when n eed is fulfilled the person is motivated. The levels in the hierarchy of Maslow are physiological needs, safety needs, belongings needs, self-esteem needs and self-actualization needs. Alderfer (1972) suggested that there are three need levels, existence, relatedness and growth. He said that fulfillment of these needs makes a person motivated.Herzberg (2003) foster worked on Maslows theory and modified it by saying that there are two areas of need that motivates employees. Hygiene and motivators are two need areas. Hygienes are considered as motivators of low level which includes policy of a company, compensation plan, working environment and employee-employer relationship. The motivation has a high level in factors. These factors include achievement, responsibility, growthand advancement. If managers want to be effective and need progress in organization, then the manager should know the basics of motivation and the different ways to motivate the employees. With the help of these t hey can be able to make different motivational strategies to concord their employees engaged in work and motivate them to work even better.RESEARCH METHODOLOGYResearch methodology is process or way through which a research is being conducted. There are different types of methods for research. The method is being selected by the researcher according to the topic and feasibility to collect data as well. Success of a research is directly proportional to the methodology selected to conduct a research. Types of methodologies are given belowQUANTITATIVE METHODIt mainly deals with the numerical data or empirical investigation by using statistical or numerical tools of research. Main objective of quantitative method is to use mathematical models to get results. It is a large and random selected process. Collection of data can be done with the help of questionnaires, telephone conversation, mail, interview, experiment, and surveys.QUALITATIVE METHODQualitative research is about the strong knowing of a specific company or occasion, rather than surface information of a population having a large exemplification. It further helps in getting information related to human groups in natural or social environment. Collection of data is totally different in qualitative method, because in qualitative method data is more subjective than quantitative and human behaviors are kept in consideration while collecting the data. each emotions and behaviors of human should berecorded so that researcher may get the exact answer of respondent. Techniques mostly used in collecting the data are interviews, focus group, case studies, individual interview, objects and images.MIXED METHOD OR COMBINED METHODIt is a mixture of both quantitative and qualitative methods. It is the best approach in investigating the critical issues because researchers can apply both methods to get better results. Mixed method provides analysis of how the organizations maintain the motivation of their employees. Fo r this purpose Burger King Company is being selected. Implementing or providing motivation to the employees is not an easy work, in the same way to do research on it a large amount of information is required.RESEARCH TECHNIQUESResearch technique is known as a guideline to complete the research. Research technique has several steps and they are given belowResearch design and method.Sampling.Data assemblage.Data analysis.Outcome of research. In mixed method researcher uses both qualitative and quantitative method for getting more accurate result. The process of research will go through the given steps. Researcher will require the consent of the concerned authority as well as of participants that they are volition to participate in the research.SAMPLINGSampling is the process in which researcher finalize which will be the sample of the research, or who will be the participants. Sampling is process or technique of suitable sample or information collection for research work. There are a lot of types of sampling like ingenuous random selection, snowball sampling, convenient sampling, systematic sampling, quota sampling etc. In the prove study simple random sampling technique is being used as it is the best way of sampling in which every individual has an equal chance of selection. With the help of it we can get data full of reliability but it needs more money to carry out the process.DATA COLLECTIONData collection is the process in which information is being collected from the sample. The Process of data collection starts when you decide your sample. It mainly deals with the preparation and collection of data from different jackpot of knowledge and sources. It is the major element for research work. Data should be collected from reliable sources and from those people who are willing to give information. Those who are not willing to provide information and forcefully do it then the data could be faked. Mainly there are two types of data Primary data and secondha nd data.PRIMARY DATA It is a collection of data directly from the people in the field and known as first hand data. This data is always fresh and reliable as well as it provides an accurate information needed to collect from the sample. This type of data collection needs a large amount of investment and time, researcher may use both methods to collect the data including qualitative and quantitative.SECONDARY DATA It is a collection of data from books, journals, newspaper, annual reports, and internet or through some other sources etc. and it is not first hand data. It can be archival data that is already present and you are using that. This type of data collection is less expensive and less time consuming but mostly it does not gives accurate information needed for theresearch. In this research, primary data will be collected which will comprise of both qualitative and quantitative technique.EXECUTION OF THE PROJECT after(prenominal) completing and observing data collection, a requ est letters for specialist to authenticate the devices are sent to them. Results were cross checked by researcher. In analyzing the testify consequences the researcher sought the help of a statistics person to check that data is properly calculated and evaluated or not.DATA ANALYSISDATA ANALYSIS IS real IMPORTANT AND CRITICAL PROCESS OF RESEARCH, BECAUSE IT CONSISTS OF WHOLE PROCESS OF CHECKING, CLEANING THE DATA AND ANALYSING THE DATA. DATA SHOULD BE ANALYSED PROPERLY, IF THE DATA LACK OF THIS PROPERLY ANALYSED PROCESS THEN IT leave AFFECT THE RESULTS OF RESEARCH AND THE OBJECTIVE OF RESEARCH WILL NOT BE OBTAINED. SOME OF THE DATA ANALYSING TECHNIQUES ARE FREQUENCY DISTRIBUTION, DESCRIPTIVE STATISTICS, COMPARING MEANS, CORRELATIONS AND LINEAR REGRESSIONS.To get the best result of this research both Statistical and qualitative techniques will be used. To test the null theory of the research statistical technique will be used and the standard deviation, mean will be used where nee ded.BARRIERS AND LIMITATIONS OF THE PROPOSED RESEARCHThis research deals with the employees motivation and employees should perform for the betterment of an organization. This research is a mixture of many different aspects and subjects which are Psychology, human nature and Sociology. The Bribery Scandal at Siemens Ag

1. In your opinion, is bribing unethical & illegal or just a cost of doing business? Discuss this in light of siemens transplant scandal. We believe that bribing is unethical because it takes away the fairness of a business transaction between bidders of a beat. Bribing also has a negative impact on contention because it allows for oligopolies and monopolies to emerge in an industry due to smaller competitors being unable to financially compete with the amount of the bribes. This in turn creates a barrier for gate for prospective companies and promotes the oligopoly or monopoly in place. The lack of competition affects consumer choice by reducing their options which hence stifles innovation within the industry as there is no need to generate a competitive advantage to attain customers. The legality of bribing depends on the laws of the home country that the business is based from. For example, siemens is a German based business and German law states that bribing officials of a nonher country to bring home the bacon business contracts is illegal. So, under German law, mho was guilty of bribing an official when it bribed employees of the Italian fellowship Enel to gull a contract as Enel was 68% owned by the Italian government. The counter-argument is that bribing is the cost of doing business. We disagree with this because the economic benefits gained from bribing ar not outweighing the cost to a companys reputation. As we see in this case, randomness paid a 6 million euro bribe to secure a contract treasured at 450 million euros which would seem like a cost of doing business for Andreas Kley and Horst Vigener but the legal and political cost almost triple the value of the contract in euros and a loss of reputation. These executives were fortunate to escape imprisonment for the illegal actions that were committed. A company must avoid bribing government officials to win business contracts until now they can ask their own government for some type of a id in the situation. We believe that having your home government involved in fostering or mediating the championship relationship with another company can potentially give wear results than bribing. Siemens should cave in g iodine on a business trade mission with German officials to another country because trade missions can help form a relationship and are sources f contacts which are valuable tools to win business contracts. What options do companies have to win business contracts without bribing, especially in foreign countries? Companies can use a combination of a sum of alternatives to gain a business contract without violating the law. Internally, the organization can build a better product through investing money into research and development which would then provide them with a competitive advantage to entice other businesses to choose them over a competitor.Externally, the organization can (1) contribute to the host country, (2) use complementary color relations, (3) establish the status as a market leader, (4) provide attractive business trade agreements, (5) offer outstanding business intelligence, and/or (6) differentiate do with quality contractors. Contributing to a host country would include assistance in a countrys development in considerations of infrastructure, argument generation, investments, and through imports. The use of complementary relations is a common practice in the business world. An example would be the relationship between gondola car manufacturers and host countries. For a foreign company to enter the Chinese auto market, they need to establish a joint venture agreement with a local car manufacturer. It is a policy that the Chinese government imposed to protect the local auto business from strong foreign competitors. (source cited http//factsanddetails. com/china. php? itemid=349&catid=9&subcatid=62 ) Establishing the status of a market leader is less risky for a company with strong sales and a promising market for it s products. This can be an advantage in securing a care for with a strong company status in the industry. Providing attractive business trade agreements by making bigger concessions when negotiating a deal can be a great way to win a business contract. By offering a larger bulk come in subtraction or other forms of compensation such as a royalty after a set number of units sold. This shifts the bribe from an illegal under the tabularise pocketed amount of cash to an above the board legal bonus contingent on performance.Offering outstanding business intelligence skills is the ability to transfer organizational skills to better manage costs, strategies, and tactics in developing quality products and services in the foreign country. The transfer of these skills will most likely develop a keen-sighted term relationship between the company and the foreign nation it operates in. In addition, companies value intelligent partners. With this in place, companies can stand out with this kn owledge or expertise. 2. Was the board right in not extending Kleinfelds term, especially in view of his over performance as a CEO?The decision to cease from extending Kleinfelds term was undoubtedly a difficult one for a number of reasons, however it was the right decision given the awkward circumstances surrounding his term as CEO. The primary concern with this decision was that Kleinfeld had brought many benefits to Siemens in a short time. In just two years under his bursting charge Siemens stock price shot up and there was a shift in the way the company did business as the importance of Siemens customers was stressed as equally important to their technology.Kleinfelds drastic reform of the corporation, although disliked by some of the older fashioned managers, was visibly effective. This previous concern also sprouts another, by not extending Kleinfeld, Siemens would now have to find a replacement CEO a task that would surely be difficult after the public squinch resulting from the scandal. However, despite both of those concerns the decision to neglect to extend him was made. One of the reasons is that although he was impressive in his short tenure, all of the successes of the corporation under his guidance are now questionable. In other words, how much did the corrupt practices of bribery that Siemens was accused of impact the increased success of the company in that same time. This thought only tainted the view of Kleinfelds time as the CEO. Even if Kleinfeld was truly fully ignorant to these corrupt practices, it does not absolve him because as the CEO it is his duty to be in full control of Siemens. He failed at clearly explaining to the entire corporation their code of conduct with regards to bribery and the consequences, therefore he is personally to be held responsible for the actions of his employees. It is for these easons that Siemens needed a clean slate if they were to reform their public image. If Kleinfeld had been retained then much of these beliefs would continue and it would have been harder still for Siemens to recover from such a devastating scandal. A new leader was needed to represent an ethical overhaul of the corporations code of conduct in order to effectively rebound from the backlash of the events. What is likely to be the impact of his departure on the company? Kleinfields departure as a CEO from Siemens had an impact on the employees, the board of directors, the companys revenues, and the intellectual property.Kleinfied was very popular in the company and a charismatic leader to a number of young and proactive employees, there is a possibility that these employees to follow his departure. Also, because of the employees admiration of Kleinfields management style there is a possibility that these workers might retrogression to the old fashioned ways of doing things in the company. Another element in the company that was affected by Kleinfields departure was the board of directors. We know that Klein field did a major restructuring in Siemens, but didnt create a good relationship with the supervisory board. This potentially made him expendable when the corruption scandal hit, and open up the eyes of everyone on the board of directors to a new change in conduct and genial responsibility. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, another way where Kleinfields departure might affect the revenues of the company would be in the future election of a new CEO. Given the bad reputation Siemens acquired, it stands to reason that they will have to overpay a new qualified person to become the CEO because that person will have to deal with resucing the company in the wake of this scandal.Nevertheless, one of the biggest impacts of Kleinfields departure from the company is the loss of intellectual property. By losing a very efficient CEO, who transformed the company in a short stoppage of time, Siemens lost a great asset that can also become a threat to the company if hired by a competitor. Was Siem ens really at fault or was it just unfortunate to have got caught given the perception that many companies have to resort to bribing to win contracts? We believe Siemens was unfortunate to get caught but that it is also their fault. Firstly, we think it is unfortunate because there are many other companies that bribe in the world. Being one of the some companies caught bribing made Siemens situation unfortunate, but it didnt exempt it from being the companys fault. Since the company decided to bribe, they fully understood the consequences of getting caught. equivalence this with a thief just because all the other thieves are stealing, it does not mean robbing someone is without recourse. In the end, because Siemens acted illegally by choosing to ignore its corporate social responsibility and by abiding the rules of the country, it is reasonable to recognize the company made a mistake by taking a poor risk and having it backfire. work out Cited Helen Deresky,International Management Managing Across Borders and Cultures, 7th ed. Media Convergence Essay

What is meant by the term media convergence with regard to technology, and how has it affected day-by-day life? For technology, media convergence is when different media come together to do a similar task. The poster electric shaver for this is the smart phone. Smart phones argon used to talk, text, email, social network, school, business, web browsing, and take picture and video. There are things that Im sure I missed, but the smart phone has become the epicenter of technical convergence. I spend a lot of my time on my phone posting and promoting for my business. I contact jewelry, cat pads, and blankets so I make my items, take a picture, post it to my Etsy page, and promote my store with my phone. When I get an order, I get an email to my phone I contact the buyer for details, and take payments completely with my phone. With going to school, I need to check up on the forums to read and respond per class requirements. It makes it light to do my schoolwork when Im not home at my laptop. I tramp move out up the reading for the class on my document reader on my phone and catch up while Im out and about. I have a six month grey and I love taking his picture I take his picture and post it on Facebook, Instagram, and communicate it to my family. My family lives in another state so I use my phone to do FaceTime with them so we can see each other both the time. The smartphone has made productivity so much easier because its all in one place and instant gratification is satisfied. For some people, the smartphone has become a big confusion and a burden. I think that cell phones, in general, have done damage to peoples grammar and spelling. They use tachygraphy and abbreviations for words and have forgotten the rule of your and youre because they are using the shorthand ur. Its sad.

“Bisy Backson” representing Western Society Essay

In the novel, The Tao of Pooh we are introduced to Bisy Backson who represents the most misguided of westerly Society, as well, we are shown that Western societal regainers/philosophers/writers represent, in their own way, the Tao. Bisy Backson confuses exercise with work and activity with cr feed inivity. The Bisy Backson is almost desperately active, (p. 93) says Benjamin Hoff. He adds, Lets put it this way if you want to be healthy, relaxed, and contented, just learn what a Bisy Backson does and then do the opposite. Often, in Western Society, we focus on the final product forward we have begun the journey. When Pooh considers what he likes best in the world, he decides the moment just before you begin to eat honey was what he have a go at its most. In effect, it is the journey, or the process, that we most enjoy. This, of course, goes against the typical persons attitude toward a task, in Western Society. The goal is to get the task done (much like this journal assignment). The process is often seen as punitive. Pooh would say to enjoy the process to see it as an opportunity to create, to develop, and, above all, to understand the central constituent of change and growth in life.Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers represent, in their own way, the Tao, because actually, I do non think they represent Taoism, at all. Taoism, I think, is basically just to enjoy life in its simplest form, and not to worry too much take life as a gift and just enjoy it. Again, I think. After reading this book, (I still have two or three more chapters to go), I still cannot manage to understand a simple meaning of Taoism. I have looked on the internet, and it is nothing like Pu, because everything I have come across is all so complex. Anyway, if Taoism is that, Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers do not represent it, at all They question everything, want to know answers, and usually they question their own existence.Would someone who is someone like , Pooh, question their existence? I dont think so. In addition, Western societal thinkers/philosophers/writers do not learn how they should question, they do not learn these theories, they do not learn about Taoism, they just merrily think and their answers of their questions may just so kick downstairs to fall under Taoism. They do not study Taoism to think like a Taoist. They do not read The Tao of Pooh, to learn about how they should think though manyphilosophy courses, such as possibleness of Knowledge, may be text based, which I find, is ironic. For direct reference to the text, What does Christopher Robin do in the mornings? He learns. He becomes educated. He integratesknowledge Of course, all this said with some words capitalized for no reason, and other random words to get to the point. Philosophers do not learn, they teach themselves.

Essay Dramatistic Analysis on Breaking Bad Essay

Cady is going to encounter psychological struggle and spontaneous social rules that teen girls face today. Through the bolshy perspective, the movie will be analyzed in order to show how sometimes the pull to conform to hegemony is so important that we have no prime(a) that letting us be dragged to respect the established hierarchy. Mean Girls is an excellent artifact, worthy of investigation in the way that it shows how we expect teenage girls to act, but also how difficult it is for them to refrain from playacting that way. When using the Marxist perspective, we begin by identifying the subject positions, as models or anti-models. Mean Girls provides clear subject positions about the models characters that viewing audience ar encouraged to want to be like, and the anti-models characters that viewers are encouraged to no want to be like. Thus, the models appear to be The Plastics, a base composed of the three teenage girls Regina George, Gretchen Wieners and Karen Smith. B y analyzing The Plastics, it seems like teenage girls need to follow a specific pattern in order to be popular. That is to say, on a physical standpoint, teenage girls need to be thin, pretty, and wear tight and revealing clothes, while on a behavioral standpoint, they spend their time gossiping, partying, dating, and talking about boys, rather than focusing on their academic success. On top of the hierarchy is Regina George, and the two other Plastics are her promoter. On the contrary, the anti-models, challenge the status quo and considered as freakish or undesirable are represented by Janice and Damien. Both of them are belonging to the oppressed group, or the group that is considered as inferior and subordinate to the dominant group. Mean Girls depicts how easy it is for a dominant group (The Plastics) to impose its ideology on other groups. The interests of the empowered group are then promoting as universe natural. Indeed, in Mean Girls, the dominant social group keeps the c ontrol over the other groups because nobody dares challenging the authority claimed by The Plastic. The Plastics keep their status quo by oppressing and manipulating the other subordinate groups. They dictate how things should be. The positivist power of popularity combined with the negative disempowerment of being unpopular and rejected ultimately reinforces hegemony. That is to say, those who are popular are empowered even if popularity is just a facade for these teenage girls, and those who are not popular are disempowered. By focusing on Cady Heron, and observing how from an innocent teenage girl, she becomes a terrible Plastic, we toilette deduce that once accepted by the dominant group, people have trouble in comprehend the flaws and drawbacks of the hegemony they are in.In order for them to be aware of it, they have to become a member of the subordinate group. Only the anti-models characters are able to see how wrong is the hierarchy they live in, and are willing to interp olate it in order to create a more equal system. Mean Girls proposed both a pet and an oppositional view on the hegemony. Indeed, from the beginning to the center(a) of the movie, Mean Girls brings a preferred reading with Cady altering her fender beliefs, joining the dominant group and becoming a Plastic.Cadys desire to respect submission can be explained by a need to fit in and avoid ridicule. As a consequence, the viewers, siding with her, support the status quo. On the other hand, from the middle to the end of the movie, Mean Girls gives an oppositional reading by considering that The Plastics ought not to be empowered, in order to have a more equal system. Indeed, by the middle of the movie, Cady understands that her destructive behavior made her loose her two closest friends (Janice and Damien). She also realizes she needs to stop acting like a Plastic and to categorize people correspond to superficial traits, and that she should start considering people according to diffe rent characteristics (intelligence over beauty for example). As a consequence, Cady, desirous of putting things right, starts to think how she could readjust the hegemony just about her. Thus, she considers destroying the hegemony reigning at school in order to challenge the status quo. At that time, the movie gives the viewers an oppositional reading rejecting thehegemony. In spite of the casualty and frivolity of the topic addressed (teenage girls movie), Mean Girls is still interest to study because it gives us some interesting and engaging acumen into Marxist perspective and hegemony. Mean Girls shows us how hard it is to resist hegemony when everyone else is subjected to it. Mean Girls also makes viewers being more critical about how hegemony is reproduced in regular patterns of life, like the passage in high school for example.
